History of Soil Conservation in Queensland

Opportunities to Achieve the Sustainable Use and Management of Land in Queensland - Proceedings of a seminar at the Bunya Mountains, September 15, 2007 (PDF 2.45 MB)

This proceedings is essentially a concise history of soil conservation in Queensland. Early farming and grazing practices had a disastrous impact on our land. For example, by 1950, there were 16000 ha of land on the Darling Downs that was so severely eroded it could no longer be cultivated.

In the late 1940s, the Queensland Government began a program of extension and research to promote soil conservation activities and to enable a greater appreciation of erosion processes and the suitability of different soil types for particular land uses.

Extension officers worked closely with farmers to help them plan and implement soil conservation programs. Great success has been achieved and the ‘disaster’ paddocks of the 1950s are now a thing of the past. But the task is far from complete and further work needs to be done. The proceedings includes the results of a workshop held at the seminar to provide advice on initiatives to continue the implementation of sustainable land management practices in Queensland.

The proceedings contains the following papers:
